Samuel Okyere replicates the Akuaba (fertility) mask of the Akan people with impressive detail. He carves the mask by hand from sese wood and includes a doll as part of the headdress. Adorned with embossed aluminium plates and painted details, the mask is finished with clay to achieve an aged finish. According to longstanding traditions, a couple unable to conceive would bring a similar mask to the fetish priest. Once he prayed to the spirits he would return the mask to the couple to take home.

Preserving Traditions

Samuel, a true veteran of his craft, started carving in 1966. He is always sharing his talents by teaching his traditional techniques to anyone, including the younger generation and even tourists.

Samuel pays currently for the education of four children. Two are his children and two are not from his own family. Samuel is a gracious person with a big heart, which can be seen through his desire to help and enabling education for those outside of his family.
