Perched on a topiary tree, a peacock enjoys the freedom of his palace garden. The bird and companions are sculpted from a single block of kadam wood. This astonishing statuette from Suresh and Devender Garg features an adult peacock with a smaller bird on its back and a third tiny peacock inside the latticed body. The exquisite birds were favorites with royal courtiers of the Mughal empire and figure widely in contemporary Indian art.

There must be many secrets to successful Jali openwork wood carving, and Suresh and Devender Garg are clearly masters of all of them. Such talent, what skills! This is one of those pieces where you continually ask yourself, How could they do this? Its a total delight and I am excited to have it in my home.

I bought this for my son. He liked it so much that he bought it as a gift for a fellow elephant collector!
