Walter Jose Acosta realistically depicts the young fighting man with a shield on his wrist and a fearsome truncheon. The short tunic permits freedom of motion while his helmet is strapped on to ward off blows and is crowned with a ceremonial tumi blade. This huaco, or terracotta vessel is a realistic portrait of a man from Peru's pre-Inca Moche culture. Archaeologists believe these "hard portraits" were crafted for ceremonial purposes to guarantee a life after death. They have been found in tombs, and may be a way of identifying the dead as a member of Moche society.

SeƱor Acosta, your ceramic work is outstanding. A year or so ago, I bought your Bird hunting Fish ceramic, and told you I love it, but never found the place to review it. Now I have added your Lauging Moche Head, a replica of a Moche ceramic Ive seen photos of in the Metropolitan Museum, and your replica is absolutely perfect. Every one of the visitors to my home gets to see your wonderful work, and hear some things about the Moche. Thank you so much . Marsha

I have several pieces of Mr. Acostas beautiful Moche ceramics. They are so realistic that they have to say replica on the bottom. Usually I order the Moche nature pieces of animals, but this time decided on this cultural scene. I love the interesting details of the boat with the face at the rear. Ive set him sailing among my vining plants where the natural look of the colors blends in well.

This vessel is a true testament to Mr. Acostas art. The ceramic is perfect and the painting flawless. Its signed at the bottom, and I can see why it needs to say it is a replica as it looks like right out of a museum. I love the scene and it makes me imagine places long ago. I particularly like the Nazca art and colors, but have also acquired some of his other pieces (moche) when I can splurge on a new one. Highly recommend.
