Signed Painting in Blue of Buddha's Footprint from Thailand, "Buddha's Blue Footprint"

Buddha is a favorite theme for Thotsapon. He depicts the Buddhapada, or "footprint of Buddha." Beautifully stylized with intricately patterned symmetry, this schematized design shows all the toes to be of equal length. Symbols of the Lanna, or Northern Thai zodiac appear in yellow.

When Buddha stepped back onto earth after reaching enlightenment, his feet made an imprint where he stepped, the first and most honored of these imprints being the supposed imprint atop Adam's Peak in Ceylon. These footprints are venerated in all Buddhist countries.
