In Thailand, turtles are symbols of good luck, revered for their longevity. Sompamitre carves wood into the desired shape and coats it with lacquer. Once dried it is polished and another coat is applied – up to twenty times. The final layer is polished with powdered fired clay and painted by hand.

This marvelous decorative plate is the creation of Daeng Thanunchai in Thailand. The plate is crafted through an elaborate process of forming the coiled bamboo on a lathe, and then applying several layers of a lacquer mixed with the ashes of burnt rice-paddy husks. Subsequent layers of colored lacquers and clear lacquer are applied, and the plate is sanded between each application. A final polishing with powdered fired clay gives the plate a gloriously glossy finish.

Prathin depicts the magnificence of the Subhannahong, or "Golden Swan Ship," the ship belonging to the actual King of Thailand. In olden days, whenever a Thai king wished to travel on a barge, he would be escorted by a procession of up to 100 ships in a procession called Phayuha Yatra. The ships would fall into a war-like formation to ensure the king's safety. Today, the King of Thailand travels on the Subhannahong when he takes offerings to the monks at the royal temple; according to popular belief, it is a sign of good luck to be able to see the king in his royal barge.

The artisan works in the traditional lacquer techniques of Northern Thailand and the images are meticulously etched by hand.

After purchasing "Celestial", a similar bowl by the same artist, I knew I had to have this one too. Now I have them both displayed together on the bookcase in my living room, and they look beautiful! Very beautiful small present

I bought this set to give to three of my aunts so I could give something similar to each of them and avoid family quarrells about ?My present isn't as good as hers~? without giving them exactly the same thing. These boxes worked perfectly. Now they can go on quarrelling about somebody else's present.
