The Virgin of Guadalupe is a venerated saint in Latin America to whom countless miracles are attributed. Inspired by her faith and hope, Peruvian artisan Erika Ulloa crafts this traditional Andean retablo from wood and ceramic, adding floral details. The centrepiece is the Virgin of Guadalupe, surrounded by candles that symbolize the hope-filled prayers many make in her name.

After Christ's death on the cross, the image itself came to be venerated as one of the most important Christian symbols. Alejandro Chávez shows an empty cross, graced with a portrait of Jesus. Ladders reach to beams where ofrendas (offerings) have been placed. Figures in traditional Andean dress kneel below the cross, their eyes lifted in devout prayer. Known as a retablo, this traditional diorama is housed in a colorful chest crafted of wood and painted. Chávez carefully models each figure from ceramic plaster and paints them by hand; the retablo receives an antique finish.

This beautiful portrait of the Virgin captures her sweet spirit and her devotion to God. Bowing her head in prayer, she crosses her hands on her breast. The Montalvo Family sculpts the reverent image in low relief to create a cedar wood panel of exquisite detail. Radiant bronze leaf defines Mary's halo.

A metal hook at the back facilitates hanging.
