Un loro azul vivaz se posa en la rama de un árbol. Con las alas abiertas, hace alarde de plumas coquetas de colores primarios brillantes. Pablo and Lucy Mendez continuar con lo tradicional alebrije arte popular que aprendieron de sus propios padres para elaborar la hermosa ave.

La tradición oaxaqueña de los alebrijes se origina en el arte de Pedro Linares (1906-1992), un artista de papel maché de la Ciudad de México. Mientras se encontraba en coma debido a una enfermedad grave, se encontró en un bosque de sueños con criaturas fantásticas hechas con partes del cuerpo de diferentes animales. Gritaban: "¡Alebrije! ¡Alebrije!". Cuando despertó, Linares elaboró ??las figuras en papel maché y su influencia llegó a Oaxaca, donde se tallan en madera de copal.

Como cada escultura es una obra de arte popular creada individualmente, las formas dependen de la rama de madera y pueden variar levemente. Las plumas y el tronco del árbol se desmontan para protegerlos durante el envío.
