Pablo and Lucy Mendez En México se trabaja en la forma tradicional de arte popular oaxaqueño llamada alebrijes Para crear esta maravillosa escultura, el delicado ciervo naranja está tallado a mano en madera de copal y luego pintado con todo lujo de detalles. La tradición del arte popular de los alebrijes se remonta a la década de 1930 en la Ciudad de México. Un hombre llamado Pedro Linares enfermó y en sus sueños febriles vio una tierra extraña poblada de criaturas curiosas: un burro con alas, un gallo con cuernos de toro y un león con cabeza de perro. Todas las bestias corrieron hacia él, gritando la palabra sin sentido "¡alebrije! ¡alebrije!". Tras su recuperación, Linares comenzó a recrear las criaturas fantásticas que había visto en su sueño en papel maché. La forma de arte ganó popularidad y ahora los alebrijes se hacen tanto de madera como de papel maché. El mismo estilo de pintura también se puede encontrar en otros artículos (no animales).
