Alebrijes a menudo son un híbrido de animales reales, como elefantes y cocodrilos, o pueden ser criaturas más fantásticas, como dragones. La artesana Teresita González de Xoxocotlan en el estado mexicano de Oaxaca crea una elaborada madera de copal tallada a mano alebrijes libélula, o calumnia. El insecto está bellamente pintado en rojo intenso con detalles en negro, azul y amarillo. Las piezas pequeñas se separan para el envío para protegerlas de roturas.

Se dice que Oaxaca alebrijes la tradición desciende directamente del artesano de la Ciudad de México Pedro Linares (1906-1992). Cuando tenía 30 años, enfermó gravemente y cayó en una especie de coma. Mientras estaba inconsciente, tuvo un sueño fantástico. Estaba atrapado entre la tierra de los vivos y la de los muertos; el lugar parecía un bosque y estaba poblado de criaturas con partes del cuerpo pertenecientes a diferentes animales. Los seres pronunciaron repetidamente la palabra alebrijes, y cuando Linares despertó, recreó estas figuras en colores vivos utilizando técnicas de papel maché y las llamó alebrijes . Su trabajo se hizo famoso y finalmente influyó en los artesanos del estado de Oaxaca que decidieron elaborar alebrijes utilizando métodos tradicionales de tallado en madera y de acuerdo con la cosmovisión de esa región.
