Sankofa, un tradicional africano occidental adinkra símbolo, adorna la base de un tambor djembé tradicional. Representa a un pájaro con la cabeza vuelta hacia atrás y quitándose un huevo del lomo. La palabra sankofa en el idioma twi de Ghana significa "retroceder y tomarlo", en otras palabras, regresar a las raíces o tomar lo bueno del pasado.

Lawrence Kattah crea los patrones en madera tweneboah. El djembe se originó en Benin y se ha introducido en los países vecinos; se ha vuelto indispensable en el reggae. El parche de piel de cabra está sujeto por anillos de hierro envueltos en algodón, y el tambor tiene un asa de cordón de macramé.
