With this Peruvian retablo, Erika Ulloa pays homage to the sacrifice of Jesus. Crafted of ceramic within a wood box, Jesus on the cross is visited by the Holy Spirit, surrounded by colourful flowers and those who bring him gifts. Erika diligently paints the intricate, tactile composition by hand, opening with floral doors that swing on faux leather hinges.

This retablo has meaning to me being that Peru was the first country that I travelled to outside of the US. Just opening the retablo everyday is a joy. I am reminded of the joy and warmth of the Peruvian people and also of the many Catholic Churches that I visted. The craftsmanship detailing is beyond words. One can just stare and admire it in awe. It is at the center of my altar. I had it blessed on the day that I opened the package. Thank you Ms Erika for the love ?? and passion that you put into making this beautiful retablo that I will treasure forever. ????

Erika Ulloa is my favorite retablo artist on the Novica website. I already have a nativity retablo by this artist that I will display through the holiday season. But this piece spoke to me the minute I saw it. The beauty of the ceramic figures, the fine detail in decoration, and the stunning vibrant colors all called to me as an artist. Ulloas portrayal of Catholic symbolism in Christs Passion is powerful and moving. Added to it is the overall charm of Andean flora and costume. It will have an important place in my religious art collection.
