Sometimes called "parasite wood", benalu wood is a parasitic plant that feeds off the sap of a chinaberry host tree. Their unusual formations lend themselves to wonderful sculptures like this one from artisan Yudi Suardi in Bali. The artisan carves the hummingbirds by hand from jempinis wood, placing them on a unique benalu wood base. As natural, found benalu wood pieces are used, please expect variations in the size and shape of the base.

The piece is very beautiful. You can almost see the wings flutter as the hummingbirds feed. It was surprising to me how light-weight it is. And its amazing that it was created from what was basically trash wood.
