Emmanuel Atiemoh Yeboah paints their images with oils and applies fabrics of batik for her garment, head scarf and shawl. "This composition is about courage and motherly love," confides Yeboah, who bases this collage on the women who try to find a way back home after trying to make a living in the city. "How will they return?" asks the artist.

Charming and elegant, a delightful Maria doll wearing a red dress and bows in her hair decorates this ceramic plaque from Mexico. Maria Isabel Cruz creates this piece, crafted using the dry rope technique, in which a wax mixture made of magnesium oxide and fat are applied to the outlines of the image or motif prior to glazing. The wax mixture creates a barrier that keeps the different fill colors in the design separate during firing, before burning off to reveal the blackened ceramic beneath. A length of nylon cord on the back provides for easy hanging.

The charming doll originated in Mexico City when many Otomi and Mazahua people migrated to the capital in the 1970s. Due to their unique traditional clothing, the women became known as "Marias." An educational program was established for them and artist Diego Rivera's daughter, Guadalupe Rivera Marin, encouraged crafting these popular rag dolls as a way to generate income in the 1980s. Artisan women took the idea home to their Mazahua and Otomi towns and the dolls became popular throughout Mexico and abroad.

Sunlight drenches this batik on cotton work by K. Baka. Set in Aburi, an "aklowa" (village) about 30 miles north of Accra, the painting is a personal expression of what the artist considers to be one of his sanctuaries. The pair of cottage huts and coconut trees represent twins with whom he became enamored upon first visiting the village. Towering flora backdrop the serenity of Baka's refuge.

Aburi is a hilly town, renowned for its spectacular view, as the higher elevation affords glimpses of Accra rivaling those seen from a helicopter. Here also is the home of one of the world's most significant botanical gardens - a haven for exotic, tropical and medicinal plants. Inspired by the contrast between urbanity and the peace of the countryside, Baka elaborates this work using dyes extracted naturally from vegetables.

Three small suns add instant interest to any wall, thanks to Peruvian artisan Gliseria Soto. The artisan crafts these three mirrored wall accents from cedar wood that has been decorated with bronze leaf and walnut stain for an "aged" look.

Akha artisan Thikaporn is proud to present this admirable headdress, handcrafted by her own mother, Sadaporn. She adorns the cotton headdress with an aluminum trapezoidal cap as well as multicolor pompoms. A waterfall of aluminum coins featuring dragons is flanked by multicolored glass beads to complete the grand design of this wedding headdress.

Akha women are well known for their spectacular traditional costumes which include a headdress, a jacket worn over a halter-like garment, a short skirt, a sash with decorated ends, and leggings. Akha people are a proud and timeless culture, struggling to preserve their ancestral values through their traditional skills and knowledge. Akhas believe in continuity and see themselves as a link in the chain of life, which includes birth, procreation, the preservation of the Akha way of life – which venerates family life – and death, seen as a meeting with their ancestors.
