The Indian artisan diligently carves the set by hand, using a black and white motif to create the board's trademark checkered pattern. House in a portable MDF box with iron-plated brass hardware, the board and pieces are cushioned by plush polyester velvet.

“Beautiful, delightfu!, and meaningful!”

I ordered these in addition to the soapstone carved box. I have a thing for elephants. They are beautifully carved and hold a carving within a carving. There is another smaller elephant just visible within. For me, it symbolically represents each of our species carry the future within, along with the wisdom and the hope to endure and survive. Elephant figurines with their trunks curved down represent wisdom and the abiity to overcome obstacles. I would like to think they speak to the even deeper wisdom carried within.....Ancestral and what is even deeper within us that is available to us to draw upon.

Gulam has been honored with the same distinction. He still works alongside his son and other artisans to whom he has taught this craft, and treasures the role he plays in continuing this important Indian artistic tradition.
