Jade was indeed known in Mesoamerica, but it was so rare that archaeologists thought for generations that the stone indicated trade with Asia. It was and is mined only in a small area of Central America. Carolina Quiroa fashions the apple green gem into sterling silver earrings. The open jade circle is modern but would not have been out of place in pre-Hispanic Guatemala.
