Working in papier mache, Marina Lozano of Mexico creates this excellent catrina statuette. The skeletal sculpture is elegantly dressed, with ribbons and flowers in her hair and a large slice of watermelon in her hands. Lozano designs the figurine after the original "La Calavera Catrina", a zinc etching created by the artist José Guadalupe Posada in Mexico around 1910. Posada created the character, a female skeleton with an elegant hat, as a satirical portrait of Mexican natives who aspired to European style and denied their own heritage. The catrina has since become an emblem of Mexico's Day of the Dead celebration and a popular folk art subject.

I love this happy feline creature from another world! When I removed her from the packing, my cat ran over as though she recognized the creature as a long lost friend, and very gently rubbed her face over the Fanciful Cat to mark her as hers (I guess). The Fanciful Cat is so beautiful and other-worldly! One of my favorite purchases ever! The only problem I encountered is that the placement of her tail can make her difficult to find just the right place for her.

This alebrije is amazing. I bought it to add to may collection of Marina Lozanos beautiful work. I tell my 7 year old grand daughter that these will be hers someday...and that they are not toys but works of art.

I was on the fence about this one but ultimately decided that the idea of a seahorse with butterfly wings with too amusing to pass up. Now that I have it it is a lot prettier than I realized from the pictures
