Guatemalan artisan Miguel Hernández proudly preserves two traditions - from his family and from his hometown - with the design of this cotton scarf. First, his weaving techniques on the traditional pedal loom honor the artistic legacy of Totonicapán, Guatemala. Second, he integrates the diamond patterns that distinguish his family's designs through generations. "This time I was guided by the combination of colors when I designed this black and white scarf," confides Hernández.

Preserving Traditions

Miguel first learned to read and write when he was 18, which is 11 years after he learned to weave. Using a handloom has always been a big part of his family's life and he now has more than 20 years of experience creating beautiful hand-loomed products. He was taught by his parents and preserves the tradition by teaching those in his community.

Two of his children are in high school and the eldest is attending the university.
