Details

One of the most popular saints both in the colonial period and now, Francis of Assisi appears here in his role as protector of animals, which are important in rural, traditional life. This sculpture gives the saint a joyful appearance in bright colors and flowered garb. Guatemalan carver Jose Canil Ramos from Guatemala learned to work wood into religious and folk items from his father to sell at the famous Chichicastenango market.
