In Huichol cosmology, the scorpion or tortuka is considered a protector and ally. Red scorpions grace both sides of this wonderful papier mache figurine from Miguel Diaz in Mexico. The patterns are created with the application of tiny glass beads which are added one by one, using beeswax as an adhesive. The Huichol or Wixarika are an indigenous people in central western Mexico.

A gorgeous and meaningful artwork. The beadwork is meticulous. The patterns and colours are mesmerising and vivid. And best of all it looks exactly like a jaguar! I love it and will treasure it. I also appreciated the wonderful wrapping and presentation, which meant this item was received in the UK in perfect condition. Wonderful. Warm cheers to Mexico!
"The meaning of each design motif I depict is fundamental. I take care that each element has a reason and shows our Wixarika worldview."
