A skeleton maiden wears the traditional dress of the China Poblana — literally, the "Oriental woman from Puebla." Legend tells how Mirra, a girl of India, was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in Mexico in the 1600s. Freed when her owner died, she became a nun and is buried in the Templo de la Compañía, in Puebla. Contemporary folk dancers often wear the embroidered white blouse and long, full, sequined skirt of the China Poblana. Fernando Sarvide depicts the storied woman in a display jigsaw puzzle, crafted by hand.
