"This sculpture of a woman and condor is inspired by the close relationship between the people of the Andes and nature," begins John Barrow as he confides his inspiration. "They respect animals, especially the condor. In pre-Hispanic times, the condor was not only the bringer of news, good or bad, but it was also believed to be responsible for the sun coming up every morning. They believed condors were strong enough to lift the sun over the mountains." From Barrow's 'Folklore' series, the sculpture is crafted with hand-carved segments of cedar, mahogany and ishpingo woods. He stains the woods with colorful natural dyes.

Wow!

It looks good in the picture but it looks even better in person. Also it wasn't obvious from the picture that there are a few purple feathers, which since purple is my favorite color is an absolute bonus.

Exquisite!

I have loved this piece since I first saw it. I purchased two other pieces from this amazing artist, for gifts, but this finally became available and it now hold a very special place in my home. Thank you! I am waiting for the fish family to beccome available again so that I can nenjoy that in my home as well.

Exqusite and dynamic!

I have a lot of folk art, including a number of other pieces from John Barrow, and I am mostly only interested in depictions of animals, plants, and geometric forms, not humans. However the colors of the women's dress, combined with the condor, make this one of only a handful of pieces I have in my collection depicting humans, and I am extremely happy with it! One thing I realized I especially love about this piece is the dynamism that comes from having the condor sticking out away from the piece's center of gravity.
