Barong appears in this fascinating mask by Made Mulyani. Also known as Bhoma, Barong represents the goodness that destroyed the evil Rangda. His adventures are reenacted in the form of a dance and his image is also hung on doors in Bali to ward off evil spirits.

Fierce and intimidating, the mythological Barong Bangkal protects those around him. Translated as "old boar," Bangkal is identified by his pig-like features. Made Mulyani captures the essence of this Barong in an acacia wood mask that is exquisitely carved and detailed with traditional Balinese motifs. In Hindu mythology, Barong come in many different forms and are mostly represented as animals such as elephants, tigers, pigs, ravens, goats and bulls.

Ketut Sri from Bhakti Senang Hati crafts this stunning mask depicting Barong, a mythological lion-like creature of ancient Bali. The admirable sculpture and its stand are carved by hand from crocodile wood with its unique grain. "I was born with poliomyelitis that made both my legs weak", explains artisan Ketut Sri. "Now I use a wheelchair. I joined Bhakti Senang Hati in 2002 when the foundation had just been established, and there I met my husband, who also suffer from polio. We have one daughter that has epilepsy and one son who is in kindergarten now. I create the masks myself, and my husband helps in preparing the raw material. I hope customers will like my hand-carveed mask that introduces our culture and that will also support our future."

Made Mulyani of Bali embellishes this hand carved mask using an antique effect in the image of Barong, or King of the Spirits. Detailed with traditional Balinese engraving, the mask is designed to hang on the wall and is signed by the artist.

Made Mulyani of Bali presents yet another carved wood mask in the image of Barong in tiger form--beloved creature and prominent figure in Hindu mythology. The mask is hand carved and features traditional Balinese carving techniques to achieve great detail, particularly in the crown and mane. Mulyani uses an antiquing effect to achieve subdued colors reminiscent of an artifact.

Bright colors and golden accents bring life to this hand-carved and painted mask by Bali's Nyoman Indrawati Subrata of the Subrata Family. Believed to be king of the spirits, Barong is a panther-like creature that figures prominently in Balinese legend. He is the leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda, the demon queen. The battle between Barong and Rangda is featured in the Barong dance and represents the eternal battle between good and evil.
