Oaxaca's ancient Barro Negro pottery technique lives on in the hands of artisan Margarita Revilla of Mexico. Motivated by her faith and talent, the artisan handcrafted this "black clay" ceramic wall cross, ornamented with floral details as a symbol of hope.

Set within the Ayacucho region, Mary and Joseph are joined by the Three Wise Men as they welcome Baby Jesus into the world. Asleep on a manger, He is well-guarded by a cow and a donkey while Mary holds a spindle—a tender scene crafted by Alberto Aparicio Canchari as a message of love and faith. The Peruvian artisan sculpts and hand-paints each ceramic figurine in this eight-piece set, adding a unique aura to the scene.

Margarita Revilla, a master artisan versed in malleable materials, produces this charming wall cross in her Jalisco workshop through an exhaustive process. This cross has ample care and purpose put into its creation, with the artisan firstly impressing the design into clay, burnishing to give it a striking black finish, drying it for two weeks, then baking it for three days to arrive at completion. Incorporating a floral design on the cross, Revilla blends the pre-Hispanic pottery style of barro negro, commonplace in Oaxaca, with the ancient symbol of the Western religion that arrived in Mexico with the Spanish.
