Alejandro Chávez portrays the Madonna named for Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, where a chapel was built in her honor before her assumption into heaven. In 1251, she appeared in England, offering favors and protection to those who wear her scapular. Also known as Immaculate Virgin and Star of the Sea, she inspired the Carmelite order.

Known as a retablo, this traditional diorama is housed in a colorful chest crafted of wood and painted. Chávez carefully models each figure and paints them by hand.

Long-tailed lizards appear to crawl up each of the handmade sculpture's three slender legs, while two rings of dots adorn the base of the vessel's long neck. The tripod's design is influenced by similar ceramic objects crafted by Costa Rica's indigenous peoples many centuries ago. "These are the vessels our ancestors used in funeral rituals, where they deposited the funeral remains together with other ceramic pieces and metals; these pieces carry with them a great deal of history and they comprise many years of antiquity," explains the artisan.

A beautiful work of art!

I received this packaged in a very secure manner. When I opened the package, I was surprised the Retablo was wrapped in a very nice paper in an inner package. The bow that was wrapped around the package had a small handmade figure of an Andean. A nice card signed by the artist (?) was included. The Retablo itself is a very magnificent work of art. The details are just amazing. I can't think of enough words to describe how great this is. It will be placed in a prominent place in my house. Thank you.
