Artisans from the Angel Cerón Artisan Association recreate a royal Maya mask adorned with an impressive headdress. The artisans craft the mask by hand from ceramic featuring a fearsome jaguar, or balam. A valiant Maya warrior and a feathered serpent complete the regal headdress.

Bali's Nyoman Naranata is masterful at capturing human emotion, to then transform it into an admirable work of art. Using manual tools, Naranata carves an exceptional hibiscus wood mask that portrays the force of sadness.

Hibiscus wood exhibits colors ranging from white to light gray, dark gray or even black heartwood. This natural occurrence can rarely be replicated, making each carving exceptionally unique. Please expect slight differences in wood grain color and distribution patterns. Theme and artistic quality remain the same.

Peacefulness, piety and a humble spirit are expressed in this mask by Made Tresna. He depicts a praying monk on this Balinese prayer figure. "Balinese people believe they will reach a peaceful eternity after life, but all their sins should be washed away with karma and piety," the artisan explains.

He carves the mask from hibiscus wood. This wood varies widely in its tones and patterns, thus each mask is an absolutely unique work of art.

Wearing a blue headdress, the face of a woman is depicted in red. Ghanaian artisan Abdul Aziz Mohamadu creates this mask, which is hand-carved from sese wood and accented with embossed aluminum and brass that evoke traditional scarification practices. This mask is named Alheri, meaning "grace" in the Hausa language.

Each of the three wears a unique and intense facial expression, and the trio includes tribal marks and accents including a carved bird and a miniature carved face. The Ghanaian artisan names them Asempa, which means "good news" in the Akan language.
