Funeral Rituals Handmade Ceramic Tripod Sculpture in Black from Costa Rica

Luis Alberto Gutiérrez pays tribute to his country's pre-Columbian heritage with this handmade ceramic sculpture painted with a black color created using pulverized stone. At the top of each of the handmade sculpture's three slender legs is an open cylindrical shape; the vessel features a long neck and is adorned with lizard legs and small dots. The model for the tripod design comes from similar objects crafted by Costa Rica's indigenous peoples many centuries ago. Those tripods had a function during funeral rituals. They were used during burials to heat sacred beverages such as chocolate. They were then ceremonially broken in two and buried in the tombs of the deceased as offerings, together with other objects such as ceramic pieces, jade or metal.

Long-tailed lizards appear to crawl up each of the handmade sculpture's three slender legs, while two rings of dots adorn the base of the vessel's long neck. The tripod's design is influenced by similar ceramic objects crafted by Costa Rica's indigenous peoples many centuries ago. "These are the vessels our ancestors used in funeral rituals, where they deposited the funeral remains together with other ceramic pieces and metals; these pieces carry with them a great deal of history and they comprise many years of antiquity," explains the artisan.

They loved it!

My stepson and his wife honeymooned in Mexico two years ago, and they went back last year for their first anniversary. Because of my long love affair with wolves and coffee, this was the perfect combination that joined the two into this well crafted mug. The depiction of the wolf displayed on the coffee mug is very realistic and the artisan creating this has produced a beautiful work of art. I honestly believe that my coffee even taste better in this ceramic mug because with a wolf sitting on it so to speak, it wouldn't dare be otherwise.
