"Monarch butterflies represent transformation and life's ephemerality on this physical plane, reminding us of the importance of living and enjoying each moment," explains Costa Rican artist Dania Morales while finishing her latest composition. Combining different techniques, the artisan uses acrylic colors to craft this expressionist painting, portraying a woman surrounded by butterflies in a magical scene full of symbolism.

The painting, titled Despertar con las Monarcas in Spanish, comes signed and stretched.

Lidia Veronica Echenagusia is a Cuban artist that lives in Costa Rica and specializes in different arts and crafts, painting being one of her greatest passions. She took inspiration from her previous work to capture with acrylic paints on canvas and in Expressionist style a woman whose hair houses the most exotic animals and nature. "This series of paintings was born because many people told me I should turn into paintings the handcrafted dolls that I used to make so they could appreciate them in their homes. I am inspired by nature, colors, everything that surrounds me; the strength, weaknesses and dreams of women and human beings in general," says Echanagusia.

"When I was a child my parents gave me a book with the story of Cinderella and it really struck me that all of her accessories were reversed to their original form by midnight except for the glass slippers. This intrigued me and stayed with me because the shoes represented access to an assumed freedom provided by the so-called Prince Charming," says Costa Rican artist Magda Cordoba. She works with watercolor and ink on paper to create a whole series around this theme capturing different kinds of shoes with a multicolored palette, floral motifs and a collage technique where each shoe is individually cut and then placed on the paper. The Expressionist-style painting comes with a cardboard mat and a foamboard base.

Bertha Martin del Campo illustrates the clash between reality and perception in this silkscreen print of two penguins on an iceberg against a sky blue background. "When the decision is to exchange wings for fins, this leads us to discover a different perception of a reality for every being. Inside all of us is a little-known story that we can only understand once we open our own consciousness." The artist signs her work "Maca."
