Peruvian artisan Julio Gallardo handcrafts the retablo frame from tornillo wood and paints it a creamy pale yellow with bold orange and blue flowers and warm brown trim. Inside, ceramic figurines, meticulously painted, manage a market stall selling woven textiles. Miniature woven cloth in bright colors and bold patterns hang above the market sellers. Says Peruvian artist Julio Gallardo, "I love the type of work that I do, since it allows me to form whatever scene, thought, or idea in a wood box and deepen the significance of each detail." He handcrafts this retablo of local tornillo wood, featuring two swinging doors that are painted by hand with a floral design.
