Jaina refers to a small island off the coast of Mexico where a collection of pre-Columbian carvings and sculptures were found. Guatemalan artisan Nicolas Chavez Sojuel emulates the Jaina style, adding cultural details to the subject, such as an enlarged cranium, scars across the cheeks, and small bulges on the left shoulder, indicative of ancient Mayan body alterations that were popular at the time.

The folk art tradition of alebrijes dates back to the 1930s in Mexico City. A man named Pedro Linares was taken ill, and in his feverish dreams he saw a strange land populated with curious creatures--a donkey with wings, a rooster with bull's horns, and a lion with the head of a dog. The beasts all ran at him, shouting the nonsense word, "alebrije! alebrije!". Upon his recovery, Linares began recreating the fantastical creatures he had seen in his dream in papier mache. The art form gained popularity, and alebrijes are now made of wood as well as papier mache.

Beautiful and adjustable!

I have seen a great many works of art, and your hummingbirds are some of the prettiest. They make me smile each time I see them, and draw constant compliments. I have all four colors and would love to see more: maybe bright yellow, light blue, lilac, gray, copper? And maybe beaks of different lengths and angles. I have moved the wings so some have big feathers in front, others in back or in the middle. They hang from my office ceiling, all at different heights. Thank you for creating such beautiful things!
