The charming doll originated in Mexico City when many Otomi and Mazahua people migrated to the capital in the 1970s. Due to their unique traditional clothing, the women became known as "Marias." An educational program was established for them and artist Diego Rivera's daughter, Guadalupe Rivera Marin, encouraged crafting these popular rag dolls as a way to generate income in the 1980s. Artisan women took the idea home to their Mazahua and Otomi towns and the dolls became popular throughout Mexico and abroad.

Indian artist Vidushini portrays a loving mother and joyful baby elephant strolling in the gardens using the Madhubani style of painting. Madhubani art began in the village of Maithili, of the Bihar state, originally created by women on the walls of their home. This style evolved from elaborate home decorations to becoming important aspects of festivals and eventually appealing to lovers of art both within India and internationally. The painting is signed by Vidushini, who specializes in Madhubani styles at this time and even had her artwork selected to be the cover of Delhi University's textbook, Indian History and Culture.

Protagonists of the Ramayana, a beloved Hindu epic, Rama and Sita are joined in marriage. Sita holds the floral garden exchanged as part of the ceremony and Rama holds a bow while her father and his younger brother accompany the happy couple. Devendra Kumar Jha works with natural dyes on handmade paper to create a beautiful Madhubani painting. Originating in northern Bihar, Madhubani painting was once used to decorate the floors and walls of homes. Life in harmony with nature is a popular theme for this art style.

This original wall sculpture from Ghana's Robert Aidoo Taylor conveys the old Akan aphorism Konsuo na bo ahina, which means "It is the one who fetches water that breaks the pot". Depicting a woman carrying water, the piece is hand-carved from native mansonia wood and painted in green, blue and brown.

Rama is the protagonist in the Hindu epic poem, Ramayana, or "Romance of Rama." Originally written in Sanskrit, it tells the story of Rama, the seventh incarnation of the god Vishnu, who eventually wins the hand of Sita in marriage. Displaced as rightful heir to his father's throne, Rama goes into exile with Sita and his brother Lakshmana but, while in exile in the forest, Sita is abducted by Rahwana, the lust-driven ogre king. Aided by the monkey general Hanuman, Rama searches for Sita and slays Rahwana, rescuing his wife. After his success, he soon returns to his rightful place as king.
