The face of a Mayan warrior is depicted wearing the head of a spotted jaguar, featuring one long fang and one short fang. Colorful designs and floral motifs are diligently painted by hand. Say the artisans, "In these masks, we want to depict the Guatemalan flora and fauna, combining them with the colors of our traditional textiles."

Hoping to preserve their culture and honor their country's fauna, artisans of the Caronco Maleku Association from Costa Rica handcraft a balsa wood mask. A magnificent leopard and a brave Boruca warrior take over the design, with all the details painted by hand.

Costa Rican artisan Gregorio García handcrafts this silver-toned decorative wall mask, inspired by a Boruca warrior from traditional plays depicting resistors to the Spanish conquistadors. The mask is made from resin molded by a hand carved wooden mold and reinforced with fiberglass. The mask features exaggerated features, especially the large, expressive eyebrows.

The carved face is adorned with a colorful plume to depict the ornamentation of the upper echelon of Mayan society. The mask is made with an elaborate method to create a unique masterpiece that will stand out on any wall.Of his inspiration, the artisan says, "I made this mask thinking of the artistic beauty of Mayan plumes. Besides being important for denoting social class or hierarchy, they were pieces of art."
